 Honoring Our Heroes in Russiaville

AMVETS Post 27 has proudly placed American Flags on Veterans’ graves each Memorial Day Season. During this time, we discovered that many of our heroes in the Russiaville Cemetery had unmarked or unreadable graves — and we’re changing that!

Together with the Russiaville Cemetery Association, we’ve launched a community project to mark every Veteran’s resting place. By Veterans Day 2025, all 200+ Veteran graves will have a flag holder with a red, white, and blue ribbon identifying them as honored Veterans.

We found maps dating back to 1940 to help locate every grave. Once complete, all maps will be kept up to date by AMVETS Post 27 and the Cemetery Association.

In addition, we’ve been carefully spraying older gravestones with Wet & Forget to remove years of mold and mildew. Many stones that were once unreadable are now clear and legible again — allowing families and visitors to finally read the names of those who served.

Flags will remain up through summer and be respectfully removed & retired during the cemetery’s fall cleanup in October.

Please place only one flag per Veteran’s grave to show respect. Extra flags will be removed and retired with honor.

Fun fact: Before November 1, 1990, the VA would only provide a headstone or marker for a veteran buried in a private cemetery if the grave was unmarked. Veterans who died on or after that date could receive a government-furnished marker even if their graves already had a private marker.

Some earlier Veterans were never identified — until now.

This project ensures that every Veteran in Russiaville will be remembered, honored, and never forgotten.
